We've hosted guests through a lot of Decembers here, and this is the one we tell people not to miss. What started as a handful of lantern-lit canoes back in 1908 has grown into one of the largest and oldest holiday parades of its kind in the country. On a good night, more than a hundred boats join the procession, from kayaks and Duffy electric boats to multimillion-dollar yachts dressed bow to stern in lights, animated displays, and the occasional rooftop Santa.
The whole harbor turns out. Restaurants fill their patios, homes along the water glow, and the smell of hot cocoa drifts down the boardwalks. It's the kind of evening that feels distinctly local, and it's completely free to watch from shore.

Here's the part first-timers often miss. While the boats light up the water, the homes light up the shore. The Ring of Lights is a home-decorating competition among the waterfront residences ringing the harbor, with Balboa Island's cottages putting on an especially charming show.
