Green season (June-October): Hot, humid, and lush. Mornings are typically bright; rain waits until late afternoon or overnight and rolls through in short, dramatic bursts. September and October bring the heaviest rain. Worth flagging plainly: humidity climbs sharply from July through October, and that humidity - not the raw temperature - is what makes these months feel noticeably hotter and stickier than the dry-season average below suggests.
Year-round, temperatures hover around a pleasant 77°F average, but that number can be misleading - July through October combine real heat with high humidity, and the heat index on a muggy August or September afternoon runs well above what the thermometer alone implies. There's no genuinely "cold" month, but the July-October stretch feels considerably hotter and more oppressive than the average suggests.

November — the sweet spot opens. The rains taper off and the landscape is still jungle-green. Days turn dry and warm, crowds are light, and prices haven't hit their winter peak yet. Polo season typically kicks off this month, with Sunday matches and brunch at the nearby La Patrona club. One of our favorite times to come.
December — high season and whales arrive. Sunny, dry, and lively. Humpback whales begin migrating through Banderas Bay (roughly December through March), and holiday visitors fill the plaza. Book well ahead if you want the last two weeks of the month.
January — peak dry-season perfection. Reliably sunny, low humidity, and comfortable evenings. This is prime whale-watching, prime polo, and the busiest stretch of the year. If a January trip is on your mind, reserve early; the best homes in the San Pancho collection go first.
February — festival month. The weather stays gorgeous, and the town throws its beloved San Pancho Music Festival in the plaza, usually the third or fourth weekend of February. It's free, community-run, and one of the most joyful weekends of the year. Whales are still offshore. Expect a full village.
March — shoulder season begins. Still firmly dry season and still warm, but the winter rush eases. Crowds thin, availability opens up, and the vibe relaxes. Our pick for travelers who want peak weather without peak prices.
April — warm, calm, and quieter. Dry and increasingly warm, with the last of the polo season winding down. Beaches feel spacious and the water is calm and swimmable. A lovely, low-key month.
May — the warm-up before the rains. The hottest, most humid stretch of the dry season, with the first hint of moisture toward month's end. Crowds are light and rates drop. Bring a fan and lean into slow afternoons.
June-August — green season and warm surf. Summer brings heat, rising humidity, and afternoon storms that leave the hills brilliantly green - humidity builds steadily through this stretch and peaks in the following months. Mornings are usually clear enough for the beach, and the surf picks up. This is the quietest, most affordable stretch, ideal if you want San Pancho mostly to yourself.
September-October — the wettest window, and the most humid. The rainiest months of the year, with the most dramatic storms, and the kind of thick, heavy humidity that makes the air feel hotter than the actual temperature. It's lush, cheap, and deeply peaceful, but some restaurants and tours run reduced hours. Best for flexible travelers who don't mind trading a little sunshine - and comfort - for solitude.
When to visit for what you want
For the best weather and the most going on: December-February. Sun, whales, festivals, and full-village energy. For great weather and fewer people: March-April. Our favorite value window. For quiet and the lowest prices: June-October, rain (and humidity) included - just be ready for the heavy, sticky air that builds from July onward.
Where to stay by season
In high season, being able to walk everywhere is a gift. The rooftop pool at La Esquina, one block from the beach, is a fine perch for sunset once the plaza fills up in December and February; a few units catch partial ocean views, and the whole building shares sweeping rooftop vistas.
