The catch: this is the busiest, most expensive week in town, and the best multi-bedroom homes sell out months in advance.

What's open over the holidays

Short answer: almost everything, with two exceptions.

Sayulita runs on tourism, and Christmas week is peak season, so the town leans in. Beachfront palapas, taco stands, coffee roasters, boutiques, and the surf schools on the main beach all stay open. Tour operators keep running snorkeling trips to the Marietas Islands, jungle horseback rides, and whale-watching outings (December is early gray- and humpback-whale season on this coast).

The two things to plan around:

  • December 24 evening and December 25. Nochebuena is the big family celebration. Many local businesses close early on the 24th so staff can be with family, and the 25th is a quieter day of rest. Some restaurants take the 25th off entirely.

  • New Year's Day. Expect a slow, late start as the town recovers.

Our advice: treat Dec 24 and Dec 25 as your "cook at home" days. It's part of why a home with a real kitchen matters this week. Book any special holiday dinner out well ahead, because the restaurants that do open on the 24th fill their reservation books fast.

New Year's Eve on the beach

This is the reason a lot of our guests choose Sayulita for the holidays specifically.

There's no single ticketed countdown that owns the night. Instead, the whole town spills onto the main beach. Families set up on the sand, beach clubs and restaurants run their own dinners and parties, and just before midnight the sky opens up. Locals and visitors set off fireworks (cuetes) up and down the shoreline, so you're not watching one show from a distance, you're standing inside it.

A few things worth knowing:

  • It's a family scene early and a party scene late. Kids run around with sparklers at 9 p.m.; the dance floors fill after midnight.

  • If you want a proper NYE dinner, reserve in October or November. The good tables go early.

  • Wear sandals you don't mind losing and keep an eye on little ones near the fireworks.

Nochebuena on the 24th has its own smaller version of this: ponche (warm fruit punch), family gatherings, and fireworks that carry on into the early morning.

Markets and everyday holiday life

Sayulita's markets are a highlight any week, and they keep going through the holidays.

The town's artisan and food stalls stay busy, and the weekend farmers'-style market is a good stop for produce, prepared food, and gifts, which is handy when you're cooking your own Christmas Eve dinner. Wander the cobblestone streets off the plaza and you'll find Huichol beadwork, local mezcal, and handmade textiles, exactly the kind of thing that beats a duty-free gift.

Because you'll likely self-cater on the 24th and 25th, do a proper grocery and market run on the 22nd or 23rd, before the pre-holiday rush thins the shelves.

December weather: about as good as it gets

December sits squarely in Sayulita's dry season, and the weather is a big part of the draw. Expect warm, sunny days generally in the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (about 25-30°C), cooler evenings, low humidity, and very little rain. The ocean stays comfortable for swimming and beginner-friendly surfing.

Pack for warm days and mild nights: swimwear and sun protection, plus a light layer for evenings on the beach or an early-morning surf.

Where to stay, and why to book now

Here's the part we can't soften: Christmas week (roughly Dec 23-Jan 1) is the single most in-demand stretch of the year in Sayulita, and the homes that sleep families and groups are the first to disappear. It's normal for the best multi-bedroom properties to be reserved 6 to 12 months out. If you're reading this in early fall for the coming holidays, you're right on time, but not early.
