The best things to do in San Pancho are simple and unhurried: swim and watch the sunset on the golden main beach, spend an afternoon at the EntreAmigos community center, and eat your way around the plaza taco stands. Add a Sunday polo match at La Patrona, a beginner surf lesson, the Tuesday artisan market, and easy day trips to Sayulita and the Marietas Islands, and you have a week that families and slow-travelers love.

We host guests here year-round, and winter (December through March) is our favorite window — dry, warm days, calm mornings, and whale season just offshore. Here's how we'd spend it.

Beach, water & nature

  1. Slow down on San Pancho's main beach. The town beach (Playa San Pancho) is a wide arc of soft golden sand framed by jungle-covered hills. It has a genuinely local feel — palapa restaurants at the river end, pelicans working the surf, and some of the most reliable sunsets on the Riviera Nayarit. The shore break can be strong, so keep an eye on little ones and swim where you can see the bottom.

  2. Take a beginner surf lesson. San Pancho is a beach break, and the waves can be punchy. The mellower left side is the friendlier spot to learn, and local shops rent boards and run lessons. Book a morning session when the wind is down; afternoons tend to get bumpy.

  3. Watch a baby sea turtle release. The San Pancho marine turtle project has released well over a million hatchlings from this beach over the years. Nesting and release season runs roughly summer through mid-December, so early-winter visitors can sometimes join a sunset release. Ask locally about timing and always follow the volunteers' lead — no flash, no touching.

  4. Go whale watching (winter only). From December into March, humpback whales pass through the bay to calve. Most tours launch from nearby Sayulita or Punta de Mita, and a calm morning on the water is unforgettable for kids and grown-ups alike.

  1. Visit EntreAmigos. EntreAmigos is the beating heart of San Pancho — a nonprofit community center in a converted warehouse with a library, free wifi, a recycling program, art and language classes, and a wonderful upcycled-goods shop. Wander through, let the kids play, and consider a small donation or volunteer hour.

  2. People-watch on the plaza. Plaza del Sol is the town's living room. Grab a bench, an elote, or a paleta and watch pickup soccer, live music, and neighbors catching up. Everything in San Pancho is walkable, and most evenings begin or end here.

  3. Shop the Tuesday artisan market. In the high season, the Tuesday market on the plaza (roughly 10 a.m.-2 p.m.) fills with handmade jewelry, textiles, natural remedies, organic produce, and homemade food.

  4. Catch the San Pancho Music Festival. Each year in late February, the free San Pancho Music Festival takes over the plaza across a weekend, with local and touring acts playing into the night. If your winter trip lines up with it, plan your stay around it.

Food & drink

  1. Eat your way around the taco stands. San Pancho eats far above its size. Start with the local stands, then work through the birria, the fish tacos, and the marlin.

  2. Book one memorable dinner. Beyond the stands, the town has a surprising roster of sit-down kitchens — wood-fired, farm-to-table, and palapa spots among them. Reserve ahead in high season, especially for a sunset table.

  3. Find the coffee and the bakeries. Mornings here run on good coffee and fresh conchas. The cafés around the main street (Avenida Tercer Mundo) are ideal for a slow start before the beach.

Sport & day trips

  1. Watch polo at La Patrona. Just outside town, La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club is a genuine surprise — championship polo on manicured fields with a beach-club vibe. The season runs through the winter months, with matches typically on weekends and all-inclusive brunch packages available.

  2. Day trip to Sayulita. Sayulita is ten minutes down the highway — busier and more boho than San Pancho, with more shops, surf schools, and nightlife. Go for a half-day of browsing and lunch, then come home to San Pancho's quiet. It's the easiest contrast trip you'll take.

  3. Boat out to the Marietas Islands. The Marietas — including the famous hidden "Playa del Amor" — are a protected national park reached by tour from Sayulita or Punta de Mita. Access is limited to protect the reef, so book a licensed operator in advance.
